Back to School!

With a new year beginning, new changes will come. New friends will be made. New things will be learned. However, with all of the excitement and activities that will be going on in my life, it will be more difficult to remember to manage my diabetes... and even harder to do it correctly.

With that said, I thought I'd write a blog with tips on how to manage your diabetes for this following year and many years to come. These suggestions have helped me in many ways in my life and hopefully it will do the same for you!

1. Always use Dexcom or a sensor!
If you've ever read my blog, or met me, you know how much I love and rely on Dexcom! And the reason is simple - it helps my blood sugars stay in range/target, as well as saves time from me constantly having to test my blood sugar levels! In addition, if your parents are anything like mine - always concerned and monitoring your diabetes - then it will keep them at ease and prevent them from constantly texting you and asking you to test. With the Dexcom app, my parents are able to check it on their own and watch my diabetes from afar!

2. Keep a glucagon and bottle of tablets in your backpack at all times.
This is especially important to prevent emergencies and lows. While you may think, "Whatever I have in my lunchbox is enough to treat a low blood sugar," it never hurts to be extra careful! These two items don't take up much space, and they could save your life one day!

3. Have a friend that you can depend on.
Unfortunately, because I have moved to so many new schools, at the school I am at now, I don't have one really really dependable person I can count on with my diabetes... yet. However, if you have someone that you think could be that person for you, then lean on them! Show them your appreciation, and make sure they are always there to help. However, if you don't quite have that person, then make sure people around you know you have diabetes, don't try to hide it! In all of my classes at school, I make sure at least 2-5 people in the class know I have diabetes (that is a minimum), as well as the teacher!

There are many other tips I could give, but I'm sure you all have your own too! These are just three of the most important ones everyone should know! Good luck with back to school for everyone!
