Throughout my entire life, I always imagined what college would be like. I just never thought I would actually get there. But now I'm here!
Moving to college has definitely been an adjustment. From making friends to settling into a new home, there have been quite a few obstacles I've had to jump through and adjustments I've had to make. One of the biggest has been learning to control my diabetes.
I have always been dependent on my parents to help with managing my diabetes. I could always rely on them to wake me up in the middle of the night for a low or high. I could always rely on them to help monitor my glucose levels. I could always rely on them to help with anything related to diabetes.
Here are some things I've had to deal with in terms of diabetes here at college:
Explaining it to new friends
When meeting new friends, like in high school, I have to explain my condition. While it's not a big deal, it gets a little tiring after a while. Especially for me, since I go to such a big school (population: over 40,000), I meet so many people!
College is stressful to say the least. Unlike at home where I had a pretty set schedule of meals, here I kind of life day by day. This can be tricky because if I decide to eat late at night and have a lot of insulin on board, it can mess up my blood sugars for the night. For that reason, I have to be more cautious than my peers.
I always relied on my parents to do the ordering of supplies - there was always so much at home! Now that I am independent, I have to make sure I have a sufficient amount of supplies and plan for the future to make sure I don't run out in the case of an emergency!
